Nobody on my team is watching the clock.

We just finished building a CRM system that handles an entire outreach pipeline. Research a prospect, write the email, personalize it, schedule it, deploy it. End to end. The whole thing was built in token windows. Sprint, ship a piece, burn the window to zero, reset, go again. Not hours. Not days. Windows.

That’s the new timesheet.

The old model was 9 to 5. Clock in, fill the hours, clock out. The incentive was presence, not output. You were paid to show up, not to finish. A developer who finished their work at 2pm either found more work or looked busy until 5. The clock was the job.

Contractors never bought into that. They always measured in deliverables. Get in, build the thing, get out. Time spent is a cost, not a product. The faster you finish, the faster you move on to the next engagement. That mindset produces a completely different kind of work.

Token windows forced that contractor mindset on everyone.

The five-hour window doesn’t care what time it is. It doesn’t reward presence. It rewards throughput. Developers burning tokens fast are opening multiple terminals, running parallel sessions, splitting work into streams that all move at once. The goal is simple: get to done before the window closes.

When the CRM was done and the tokens were gone, something interesting happened. The sprint stopped. Not because we were tired. Because the work was finished and the window was empty. And in that forced pause, the conversation shifted completely. No more building. No more executing. Just thinking. What are we actually trying to do next? Who are we trying to reach? What does the strategy look like for the next month?

Think about what happens when you run out of gas. The car stops. You get out and you walk. There’s no shortcut. You move at a completely different pace and you see things you missed at speed. When my team burns to zero, that’s what we do. We get out of the office and we walk. Slow down. Talk through what we actually built and where we want to go next. Hundred percent human, no assist.

Then the tank fills back up. And we get back in the seat.

That rhythm turned out to be the most valuable part. The sprint produces the work. The walk produces the thinking. You need both, and the token window forces you to have both whether you planned for it or not.

I built a small menu bar widget to keep an eye on where the window stands without having to tab over to the Settings page every hour. Both usage bars, reset timers, plan tier. It lives in the corner of the screen and stays out of the way. Free on GitHub if you want it.
